چکیده

Tetraleurodes perseae Nakahara (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) is an exotic whiteßy in California that is aminorpest of avocados,Persea americanaMiller (Lauraceae). Fieldmonitoringover a 4.5-yr period (1997Ð2002) in a commercial avocado orchard in southern California indicated that T. perseae is probably univoltine, and adult densities show single distinct peaks each year around August. The only hymenopteran parasitoid found attacking T. perseae in California was an aphelinid, Cales noacki Howard, and parasitism over FebruaryÐApril each year ranged from 30 to 100%. Partial life tables constructed from cohorts of T. perseae in the Þeld indicated that survivorship from settled Þrst and second instars to emerged adult whiteßies ranged from 34 to 37%. There were no signiÞcant differences in marginal mortality rates by life stage for whiteßy cohorts enclosed in sealed mesh bags, open mesh bags, or on unenclosed avocado leaves. Survivorship curves constructed from Þeld phenology data indicated that average egg-to-adult survivorship was around 3.5%, which is substantially lower than that suggested from the life table analyses. Laboratory studies conducted at 25 C on excised avocado leaves indicated that 43Ð46 d is neededbyT. perseae to complete development from egg to adult. Demographic analyses of laboratory data indicate that T. perseae has a high reproductive potential with net reproductive rate and intrinsic rate of increase estimates being 21.15 1.39 and 0.07 0.001, respectively.

ECOLOGY AND POPULATION BIOLOGY Assessments of Fitness Effects by the Facultative Symbiont Rickettsia in the Sweetpotato Whitefly (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae)

The sweet potato whiteßy, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), harbors several bacterial symbionts, including the obligate primary symbiont Portiera aleyrodidarum and the facultative secondary symbionts Arsenophonus, Cardinium, Fritschea,Hamiltonella, Rickettsia, and Wolbachia. The roles of these symbionts are yet unknown. In this study, we tested for possible effects of one sym...

ECOLOGY AND POPULATION BIOLOGY Flight Phenology of Sympatric Populations of Reticulitermes (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) in Northern California: Disparate Flight Intervals Indicate Reproductive Isolation Among Cuticular Hydrocarbon Phenotypes

The diurnal ßights of Reticulitermes spp. have been reported to occur in the spring and early fall in northern California. From the spring of 1994 until the fall of 2001, we collected hundreds of alates of Reticulitermes spp. cuticular hydrocarbon phenotypes CA-A/A and CA-D during ßights from multiple locations in the San Francisco Bay Area. As predicted, there were two ßight seasons: one in th...

POPULATION ECOLOGY Seasonal Patterns of Female Homalodisca coagulata (Say) (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) Reproductive Physiology in Riverside, California

Female Homalodisca coagulata (Say) were collected from October 2001 to February 2005 from citrus at theUniversity of California, Riverside. Between 5 and 20 females per sampling date were dissected, and each was assigned an ovarian rank: previtellogenic, vitellogenic, or postvitellogenic. Ovarian ranking was used to characterize H. coagulata reproductive activity. Results of these dissections r...

ECOLOGY AND POPULATION BIOLOGY The Ecology of Inquilinism in Communally Parasitic Tamalia Aphids (Hemiptera: Aphididae)

I report the Þrst example of communal parasitism in galling aphids and quantify the effects of gall invasion by the inquiline aphid Tamalia inquilina Miller on its host, Tamalia coweni (Cockerell). On populations of the host plants Arctostaphylos spp., both T. coweni and T. inquilina exhibited facultatively communal behavior and co-occupied galls with no apparent agonistic interactions. Althoug...
